What Is Flipcord?

Flipcord is a name for hand-manipulation objects designed to move through the fingers — flipping, folding, rotating, turning and flowing from one hand to another.

The word was created by Oleksandr Kostyuk to give these objects a simple English name of their own, without borrowing meanings from established religious, cultural or traditional terminology.

The name brings together two basic ideas:

FLIP — the characteristic movement of the object in the hand.

CORD — the flexible connection between its elements.

A Flipcord does not have to follow one particular shape or material. It may be built from wooden beads, articulated plates, shaped segments or other connected elements. Wood, metal, resin and other materials can all become part of the design.

But the material is only the beginning.

The defining feature of a Flipcord is movement.

When the object moves through the fingers, the hands engage with rhythm, timing, precision, coordination and controlled transitions. This makes Flipcord interesting not only as an object, but also as a way to explore the relationship between movement, the hands and the mind.

This perspective also creates questions relevant to areas such as Physical Therapy (PT): could carefully controlled hand and finger movements become useful in exercises involving mobility, coordination or sensory awareness?
